How to Check Your Car’s Oil Level: A Quick Guide
Keeping track of your vehicle’s oil level is one of the simplest yet most important maintenance tasks you can perform. Find the hood release lever inside your vehicle—usually located near the driver’s side kick panel or under the dashboard. Once released, lift the hood and secure it with the prop rod if your vehicle uses one. Modern vehicles may use hydraulic struts that hold the hood automatically.
3. Locate the Dipstick
Most vehicles have a brightly colored dipstick handle—typically yellow or orange—labeled “engine oil.” Refer to your owner’s manual if you’re unsure where it is. Pull the dipstick out completely and wipe it clean with a lint-free cloth or paper towel.
4. Check the Oil Level
Reinsert the dipstick all the way back into its tube, then pull it out again. Look at the tip of the dipstick to see where the oil film ends. There are two marks indicating the minimum and maximum levels. If the oil is between these marks, your level is good. If it’s below the minimum mark, you need to add oil.
5. Inspect the Oil Condition
While checking the level, take a moment to assess the oil’s appearance. Fresh oil is typically amber in color and relatively clear.
