Since it’s responsible for transferring force from your pedal to your brake system, its health directly impacts your safety. Fortunately, determining its condition can be as simple as looking at its color.

What Healthy Brake Fluid Looks Like

When brake fluid is fresh and in good condition, it’s typically:

  • Clear

  • Pale amber

  • Light yellow

Fluid with these characteristics indicates that it’s uncontaminated and functioning as intended.

When Brake Fluid Begins to Age

Over time, brake fluid absorbs heat and moisture, which gradually changes its color. If your fluid looks:

  • Medium brown

  • Tea-colored
